A Guide: “Vilnius Through Belarusian Women’s Voices”
Abstract
by Batura Yuliya
The guide “Vilnius through Belarusian Women’s Voices” gives
an opportunity to take a virtual walk in the footsteps of prominent
Belarusian women: Ciotka and Zos’ka Veras. Accordingly, the first
two parts of the guide contain general biographical information
and personal stories that are told in connection with historical
places and buildings of Vilnius. The third section familiarizes
the reader with the poorly known Belarusian women’s association
in Vilnius, one of the first in Western Belarus in interbellum
time, and introduces places where its press organ was edited and
printed. This type of concept was suggested as a response to the
problem of the traditionalist vision of the cultural heritage of
Belarusian Vilnius in line with the current trend to find new approaches
to the interpretation of heritage, including its gender dimension. The guide can be considered as an attempt to show that
Vilnius heritage can communicate with us through Belarusian
women’s voices.
