The article examines the origins, evolution and modern interpretations of myths “Kiev - New Jerusalem” and “Moscow - the Third Rome.” The author shows the role of myths “Moscow - Third Rome” in the development of the imperial ideology of the Russian state. It also examines the potential of myths “Kiev - New Jerusalem” for formation of national and cultural identity and unification of Ukrainian churches.
