Destruction of the Canon: Postclassical Studies by Ruslan Vashkevich
Article
Abstract
[In Russian]
Art history is often seen as an inviolable canon, a sacred object
that cannot be challenged, contested or reworked. However, in the
postmodern age classical art as well as art history itself becomes an
object of philosophical quest as much as of artistic curiosity. The
exhibition of Ruslan Vashkevich, a well-known Belarusian artist,
entitled The Trouble with Classicists invites us to think of the «correct distance» between the subject of vision who is situated in the
contemporary culture and the canonical works of art, between vision and textuality, between art history and artistic imagination.
