by Lizaveta Bobrykava
The article is dedicated to the analysis of technological challenges and theoretical shifts in the field of cinema archives. Film archive as a "repository" of collective memory finds itself in a complex situation of rapidly changing visual and media environment as well as of cultural landscape. Taking such aspects as acquisition, capacity, digitalization and promotion as key parameters of these changes, the author elaborates on three case studies of post socialist film archives and proposes the alternative scenario of cinematheque-attractions as a possible gateway to solve the challenges of a digital turn in the domain of preservation and exhibition of classical film culture. Moreover cinematheque-attractions can be one of the possible solutions to revive the collective memory of the nation and solve the cinema consumer challenge of losing the teen audience, as attraction may bring the young generation back to the theater.
