Popularization and Vulgarization of Physical Science in Contemporary Cinema
Article
Abstract
[In Russian]
by Maksim Zhuk
In the given article the author analyses the visual language of popular science films, taking as an example a well-known film by Joseph McMaster "The Elegant Universe" (2003, USA) based on the bestseller book of the same title. It is argued that such a form of popularization could have negative consequences for communicating scientific ideas and leads to the emerging of pseudoscience rather than to the deeper understanding of science by a common individual. That process can be called "vulgarization of science".
