Action-Oriented Paradigm in Space Studies: Benno Werlen’s Approach
Article
Abstract
[In Russian]
The article is dedicated to the consideration of Benno Werlen’s
action-oriented approach in space studies. Avoiding a metaphysical
way in space interpretation (as existing irrespective of
social dimension), Werlen treats «spatial turn» as transition to the
analysis of space in terms of action, that is as social phenomenon.
He comes to the conclusion that different types of action (goal-instrumental,
norm-oriented, and interpretive ones) correspond to
different ways of geography-making (disposition models), and the
changes of – dominating in the society – type of action inevitably
entails the changes in the constitution of space. Mediatization of
contemporary life cannot but influence our spatial practices and
place identity, which makes Werlen announce the formation of
new geographical consciousness.
