What Does One Ask About When One Asks «What Is Philosophy»?

Abstract

The purpose of the report is to clear out various semantic as- pects («horizons of the expectation of the answer») of the classical question «what is philosophy?». The author singles out six «ho- rizons»: historical (time, epoch, period), historiographic (event); genealogical (origin and place); disciplinary (institution); affective (passion); metaphysical (inquiring as a principle). In conclusion the author mentions a question about the relation between phi- losophy and politics and he states that the Russian philosophy ap- peared powerless in the face of such a radical experience as Gulag.
