This article explores the question of emergence and trans- formation of humanistic education in European university tradi- tion. It will do so by taking a historical and comparative approach, looking at the histories of Newman and Humboldt university projects as they evolved in Europe and were assimilated in the United States of America. The article aims to analyze the current argumentation for liberal arts education as well.
